I-Search Memo #1: Exploratory Writing

Prompt: How did I come to this burning topic/question? What do I already know and what experiences am I bringing to it? Why is this question so vital to me?
----
[I have since changed my topic from the role of Social Media in the teaching of writing to the role of Creative Writing in the teaching of writing. Social Media use is such a commonplace feature of so many lives that I feel like I could use a break from it, rather than delve into a semester-long exploration of it. I find that Creative Writing is far more interesting than #generationhashtag anyways.]
----
It took me a while to finally settle on this new topic. I had initially set off to explore the use of social media in teaching writing, but decided to change my direction for a few reasons. First, and most importantly, I was more interested in how/if creative writing is implemented in the teaching of writing/composition.

The second reason why I changed to researching this topic of Creative Writing is because I'm genuinely interested in its role within today's high school classrooms. As someone who has benefited greatly as a writer from Creative Writing courses (albeit at the college level), I can see the use of implementing Creative Writing in secondary education classrooms.

I want to look at the C.C.S.S.'s to see how (if at all) Creative Writing is provided for. I think it's vitally beneficial to a student's development to encourage creativity in all forms. I'm curious as to whether our schools feel the same way. Are schools fostering good writing skills via Creative Writing?
